When you’re in the thick of the postpartum haze, quick, nourishing snacks aren't just a nice-to-have, they are an absolute essential. Breastfeeding or pumping burns anywhere from 400 to 500 extra calories a day, which means middle-of-the-night hunger pangs and afternoon energy crashes are very real.
If you're looking for something that feels like a rich indulgence but actually packs a functional punch for your lactation journey, let us introduce you to the Mammas Milk Bar Oaty Afghan Lactation Slice.
It takes the iconic Kiwi Afghan biscuit: crispy, chocolatey, and topped with chocolate this easy, recipe is packed with galactagogues (ingredients traditional for supporting milk supply).
The Recipe
For the Base:
-
120g Butter, melted
-
1/2 cup Sugar
-
3/4 Flour
-
2 tbsp Cocoa Powder
-
½ cup Rolled Oats
-
1.5 cup Cornflakes (crushed)
-
1 egg.
Icing: Melted Chocolate
Method
Melt the butter in a large bowl, add sugar, egg and whisk until combined.
Add flour, cocoa, lactation blend and rolled oats. Mix well.
Fold through crushed cornflakes.
Press into a lined slice tin and back for 15 mins at 180C fan bake.
Remove from the oven and allow to cool.
Pour melted chocolate as topping. Sprinkle with walnuts and leave to set before cutting into squares. Enjoy!
Pro-Tip for Busy Mums: Make a double batch! Cut half into squares, wrap them individually, and freeze. They thaw quickly on the counter for a 3 AM snack emergency.
